dangerous journey on dilapidated boats

Flood victims disembarking from a dilapidated boat at Khairi Mujhena Ghat in Rudauli area.

Ayodhya/Bhelsar. The water level of Saryu river continues to fluctuate. Saryu river has reached 22 cm below the water mark. Water is receding rapidly in flood affected areas but difficulties are not reducing. Many flood affected areas are still filled with flood water, due to which villagers are travelling by boat. Many boats are very dilapidated, there are no safety arrangements on them. About 15 thousand people are travelling on dangerous boats every day.

According to the report of the Central Water Commission, the water level of Saryu was recorded at 92.51 meters on Sunday evening at 6 pm, which is 22 cm below the red mark of 92.73 meters. Just seeing the boats used by the villagers to cross the Saryu river gives me goosebumps. During monsoon, this journey becomes even more risky. The landless villagers had settled on higher places in the middle of the Saryu river. There are 30 to 35 villages, big and small, on the border of three districts. These have become islands at present. Their population is around 15 thousand. To go to the nearby villages, they have to cross the river daily risking their lives in dilapidated and broken boats.

Since floods break off between villages, the easiest and cheapest means of transport between these villages are their boats. Due to the poor condition of boats, accidents keep happening here almost every day. Shiv Kumar, a resident of village Sarain Nasir, says that flood victims buy all the goods of their need from Shujaganj market, which is held on Monday and Thursday weekly, and bring them by boat. Revenue Inspector Shujaganj Anil Kumar Yadav says that five boats have been deployed for the transport of flood victims, which are in perfect condition. If a dilapidated boat is running, it will be stopped.

Villagers carrying bikes and bicycles on boats

The danger increases when people bring bikes, cycles and other items on the dilapidated boat. Rohit Yadav, a resident of village Kaithi Manjha, says that although a boat is an easily available means of transport, travelling in it is quite dangerous. Munna Yadav, a resident of village Khairi, says that there is a fear of the small boat capsizing. The villagers do not have the capacity to keep a big boat.
