In the last 15 days, a total of 35 people have drowned while bathing in Saryu, out of which three were swept away while 32 people have been saved by the water police and divers. At present, two to three people are drowning in Saryu every day, the water police and divers save the lives of most of the people.
On May 18, five people drowned in Saryu, four of them were from Punjab. Three were saved, but two were washed away. Their bodies have not been found even after four days. Similarly, on May 21, four students were drowning, out of which three were saved by the water police but one student was washed away. 48 hours have passed but the body of the student has not been found. Similarly, on May 19, a father-son duo from Kolkata drowned in the river, who were saved by the water police. Water police in-charge Rube Pratap Maurya said that at this time the water level of Saryu has decreased a lot. There is not much water on the bathing ghats, so while bathing people cross the water barricades, due to which accidents are increasing. Even after being forbidden, some devotees do not listen.
One and a half feet of water at bathing ghats, 20 feet of water two hundred meters ahead
According to the water police, there is very little water at the bathing ghats of Saryu at this time. The water depth at the bathing ghats is only one to one and a half feet. In such a situation, the devotees cross the water barricades to take a bath and move ahead. About two hundred meters away from the ghats, the depth of water is 10 feet, 15 feet and 20 feet at some places. During bathing, the devotees are unable to understand the depth and move ahead, which increases the possibility of drowning.
