Ayodhya. Rajesh Tiwari, accused of stealing women’s jewellery in a moving train, has been sentenced to the period already spent in jail. A fine of Rs 3000 has also been imposed. This verdict has been pronounced by Additional Civil Judge Junior Division I/Judicial Magistrate Sonal Upadhyay.
According to the prosecution, on 14th July 1996, GRP station in-charge Rajkumar Verma was inspecting Faizabad railway station with his colleagues. During this time, a young man was arrested on the basis of suspicion. An earring and a knife were recovered from the arrested youth. During interrogation, he told his name as Rajesh Tiwari and a resident of Makandapur village of Ibrahimpur police station of Ambedkar Nagar. On the complaint of the station in-charge, a case was registered against the accused Rajesh under the Arms Act.
At the same time, Phulwa Devi, wife of Munna Lal, resident of Retia of Thana Cantt, gave a complaint at the police station that she was travelling from Faizabad to Akbar by Sealdah Express on 11 July 1996. At Gosaiganj railway station, a man snatched her earring and jumped off the train. On identifying the earring recovered from Rajesh, a case was registered under the sections of theft and recovery of goods.
After investigation, the chargesheet was presented in the court but no witness from the prosecution side appeared in the court. The accused pleaded to end the case on the grounds of pleading guilty and being poor. The judicial magistrate, on the basis of facts and circumstances, sentenced the accused Rajesh Tiwari to a fine of Rs. 3000, considering the period spent in jail as punishment in all the cases.
